Recognized Programs (BC)

A Recognized Program is an occupation that follows BC provincial standards, includes a work-based and in-school component, and is approved by the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Successful completion of these programs results in the issuance of a BC Certificate of Qualification.

Aggregate Plant Operator (This program is under review by industry for update to standards)
Aggregate Plant Operators inspect, operate and perform minor repairs on “crusher” plant structural, mechanical, or electrical components or related systems. Safe handling of raw materials and quality control of the aggregate product is required.

Asphalt Paving/Laydown Technician
Asphalt Paving/Laydown Technicians work on highway and road construction operating machines that lay, screed, rake, compact or mill surface materials using stakes and level gauges. Technicians are responsible for basic safety and maintenance of equipment and the compliance of markers, grades and stakes.

Asphalt Plant Operator (This program is under review by industry for update to standards)
Asphalt Plant Operators inspect, operate and perform minor repairs on “asphalt” plant structural, mechanical or electrical components or related systems. Safe handling of raw materials and quality control of the asphalt product is required.

Concrete Plant Operator (This program is under review by industry for update to standards)
Concrete Plant Operators inspect, operate and perform minor repairs on “concrete” plant structural, mechanical or electrical components or related systems. Safe handling of raw materials and quality control of the concrete product is required.

Diesel Engine Mechanic
Diesel Engine Mechanics work in sectors such as marine, construction and transport installing, repairing and maintaining all internal combustion diesel engines and components.

Diesel Fuel Injection Mechanic
Diesel Fuel Injection Mechanics repair, install and maintain diesel fuel injection units, pumps and their components.

Forklift Mechanic
Forklift Mechanics test, repair, and overhaul all mechanical, hydraulic and electronic components of a forklift.

Heavy Equipment Operator Technician
Heavy Equipment Operator Technicians work in many industries such as mining, heavy construction, road building, earth moving, and forestry. They operate heavy machinery such as heavy articulating rock trucks, loaders, excavators, backhoes, dozers and graders. Technicians are also responsible for the basic maintenance of equipment, safety around equipment and the compliance of markers, grades and stakes.

Hydraulic Service Mechanic
Hydraulic Service Mechanics maintain, adjust and repair hydraulic units such as hoists, rams, jacks, lifting units and pumps.

Professional Truck Driver (This program is in pilot phase)
A Professional Truck Driver operates a truck for pay or profit including tractor trailers and specialized equipment; performs vehicle and minor equipment maintenance; manages cargo safely and securely; plans and conducts long and shot haul trips; performs customer relations through communication and negotiation; understands and complies with laws, regulations, and policies governing safety, customs, immigration, dangerous goods transportation, and hours of service conditions; performs administrative duties to facilitate billing and invoicing.

Tire Repairer
Tire Repairers perform tire repair, from vulcanized patching to complete retreading. Commercial and Industrial Tire Repair Shops and / or those involved in vulcanizing and recapping can provide appropriate all-round work experience. Shops specializing in Automotive Tire Repairs only cannot provide all-round work experience.

Transport Refrigeration Mechanic
Transport Refrigeration Mechanics repair, maintenance, overhaul or modification refrigeration units, engines and accessories used in highway transport carriers for the purpose of transporting food and other refrigerated items in a cool or frozen state.

Utility Grade Person (This program is under development)
Utility Gradepersons set grade for worksites, assist in the troubleshooting and locating of underground utilities, have special knowledge of trenching, excavating and shoring, install and maintain underground structures including water, sewer, gas, oil, electric and communications. They may also operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators and loaders as part of their duties.
