1. Introduction
TransportationCareers ("we", "us", "our") operates the website at transportationcareers.ca (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. By using the Service, you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
We are committed to handling your personal information in accordance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy laws.
2. Information we collect
We collect personal information in three ways:
- Information you provide directly — when you create an account, post a job, apply to a job, fill out a form, or contact support. This typically includes your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, employment history, education, certifications, salary expectations, work-authorization status, and any documents you upload (resume, cover letter, portfolio). Employers additionally provide company information, billing information, and payment details (which are processed by our third-party payment processor and not stored by us).
- Information collected automatically — when you use the Service we automatically collect technical information including IP address, browser type and version, device identifiers, pages viewed, links clicked, time spent, referring URL, and approximate geographic location derived from IP. This is collected via cookies and similar technologies.
- Information from third parties — if you sign in using a third-party identity provider (such as Google), that provider shares basic profile information with us (typically name, email, profile picture). If a recruiter or employer shares information about you to use our matching service, we receive what they share.
3. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Provide, operate, and improve the Service — including matching candidates with employers, processing payments, sending transactional notifications, and providing customer support.
- Verify accounts and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents.
- Communicate with you about your account, your applications, jobs you may be interested in, and changes to the Service.
- With your consent, send marketing or product-update messages (you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any such message).
- Comply with legal obligations, enforce our agreements, and protect our rights.
- Analyze usage patterns in aggregate to improve the Service.
4. Sharing your information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as follows:
- With employers you apply to — your application materials, profile, and any messages you send through the Service.
- With service providers — third parties that operate parts of our infrastructure (cloud hosting, email delivery, payment processing, analytics, customer support tooling). These providers are contractually required to use your information only as needed to perform services for us and to maintain reasonable safeguards.
- For legal reasons — when required by law, court order, or legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of TransportationCareers, our users, or others.
- In a business transfer — in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to the successor entity, subject to this Policy.
- With your consent — for any other purpose disclosed when we collect the information.
5. Cookies and tracking technologies
We use the following types of cookies:
- Strictly necessary — required for the Service to work (sign-in, session, security). These cannot be disabled.
- Functional — remember your preferences (language, saved searches).
- Analytics — help us understand how the Service is used so we can improve it.
You can refuse non-essential cookies in your browser settings; the core Service will continue to work.
6. Your rights and choices
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information. You can edit most account information directly from your dashboard.
- Delete — request deletion of your account and personal information, subject to retention obligations.
- Withdraw consent — withdraw any consent you have given us, with prospective effect.
- Opt out of marketing — unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in any such email. Transactional messages (account, payment receipts, application confirmations) cannot be opted out of while you maintain an account.
To exercise these rights, please open a support ticket from your dashboard. We will respond within 30 days.
7. Data retention
We keep personal information while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. When you delete your account we remove your personal information from active databases within 30 days. Backups are retained for an additional period (typically up to 90 days) before being overwritten.
8. Security
We use industry-standard administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information — including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest, access controls, regular security reviews, and audit logging. No system is perfectly secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe your account has been compromised, please open a support ticket immediately.
9. International transfers
Your information is processed in Canada. Some of our service providers may process data in the United States or other countries. When we transfer personal information outside of Canada we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information consistent with this Policy and applicable Canadian privacy law.
10. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, please open a support ticket and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date and, where significant, communicated to account holders by email. Continued use of the Service after a change indicates acceptance of the revised Policy.
12. Contact us
For privacy questions or to exercise your rights, please open a support ticket from your dashboard. If you don't yet have an account, you can create one for free to get in touch.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca) if you believe we have not handled your personal information in accordance with applicable law.
